SAILING

The Sailing Club is an opportunity to take to the water in the shadow of the Hope Cement Works.

A Brief History

Hope Cement Works has a long tradition of encouraging its employees to participate in sports, and in 1964 a few members of the workforce came up with the idea of forming a sailing section, During the winter of 1964/65 two wooden Graduate Class dinghies were built and the newly formed sailing club was launched in the spring of 1965.

Brian Potts (Joiner) who had experience of boat building was a great assistance in the club’s new venture, The section was officially registered with the RYA as the “Anvio Sailing Club”

No4 pond was allocated to the sailing Section for dinghy sailing

Works members along with associate members who have a passion for water sports activities have used this pond to its full advantage. Boats of all sizes have been launched, from 21-foot bilge keelers to small 10-foot mirror dinghies, With the huge rise in paddle sports over the past few years the section has gained quite a few new members who canoe and paddleboard. This small lake makes it ideal for leisurely paddling.
